The Gondola is the typical Venetian boat, symbol of the lagoon city (after the Lion of St. Mark, of course).

It is about 11 mt long and has an asymmetrical shape, to allow a single rower, the gondolier, to lead it easily.

Its construction requires about 1 year of work by an “ax master” who lends his work in a “squero” or a shipyard for gondolas.

At the bow of the gondola there is the typical “iron” (fero de proa).

In addition to providing balance and structure to the gondola, it contains in its very elegant forms, the most important symbols of the city.

The six “teeth” facing forward of it, represent the six Sestieri of Venice (San Marco, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Castello, Santa Croce, Cannaregio), the one facing back represents the Giudecca.

The bow above the highest tooth stands for the Rialto Bridge and the space below it represents the St. Mark’s basin.

The “S” shape that starts from the highest point to the lowest point of the “comb” represents the Grand Canal, and the Hat of the Doge is the high part of this sinuous object.

Finally, Murano, Burano and Torcello are also represented with metal embroidery placed between the six teeth.

Over the centuries, it has been the most used means in Venice.

In the past centuries, from the top of Rialto Bridge, a visitor could have admired  the Grand Canal populated by gondolas, all of them richly decorated with precious textiles, gilding and the “felze” as well, a sort of removable cabin that provided occupants with shelter from prying eyes.

Starting from 1609, by law of the Venetian Senate, all the gondolas became black, in order to avoid the excessive display of pomp by the nobility of the time.

And so, it has come down to the present day: black, slender and very elegant.
